If you’re on our website, you’re probably familiar with the work of @catcallsofnyc: collecting stories from all over New York City and writing out the comments in chalk with #stopstreetharassment, then posting the chalk art on Instagram. Our goal is to spur dialogue, provide a platform for story sharing, and promote cultural change.
And now that story sharing platform is expanding.
This is a space for you to share your experiences in other mediums. If there’s more to your catcall story than can fit in an Instagram DM, share it here. If you have a particularly impactful story, maybe about the first time you were catcalled, we want to hear it. Maybe you’ve never been catcalled, but have instead watched your peers walk home with their keys clutched between their knuckles and want to advocate for them. Or maybe you’re watching a loved one — a child or sibling, perhaps — grow up in a world where they are constantly guarding themselves from street harassment. We want your stories too.
The submission process is simple. Using the Google form linked at the bottom of this post, tell us your name, where you’re from, and share your submission. Your work can can remain anonymous if you wish. You’ll get an email once your work is posted, at which point we encourage you to share it with family and friends.
Whether it’s a short story, personal essay, poem, song, painting or drawing, photograph, or anything in between, we welcome your artistic takes. You don’t even have to be from NYC — catcalling happens everywhere and every story is worth telling.
Share your stories, and take pleasure in scrolling through the work of your peers.
